Lately I've seen a lot of comments in threads in this sub that would have been deleted a few months ago.
Have the mods started taking a more laissez-faire approach? Or they've decreased in number?
I really enjoy the high standards this sub holds it self to and keeps things clean and to the point (I.e. Not another endless thread full of puns and Reddit injokes).
The mods were doing an awesome job but lately it seems more comments are slipping through the cracks.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?
We certainly haven't intentionally taken any stance regarding this, but we have had some turnover in the mod-team and, being people*, each individual does tend to moderate differently from others. That said, if you see something in a thread you think should be removed, don't hesitate to hit the "report" button or send us a mod-mail and we'll take a look at it.
* Or so they say.
I haven't really noticed, but I'm one of the mods who isn't around as often/consistently as I was.
We've wondered a bit whether aggressive moderation may be stifling the sub, but we haven't made any decision or moderation policy change that I've seen (as I say, I'm not that dialed in these days). For me personally, I've eased up very slightly, but I often see that a comment that I let go - - or even explicitly approved - - gets removed by someone else anyway. So my observation is that overall moderation is the same as it has been for the past 1-2 years.
I suspect that when you're seeing weak comments accumulate, nobody's actively moderating. I run into that situation more than I used to.
So I'd say it's a manpower/coverage issue more than anything else. As mentioned, reporting weak comments will greatly help the next mod that comes along to catch up with the backlog.
Tangential question: Occasionally you see questions that relate to quack or fringe theories, eg did the Polynesian legendary semigod Maui travel to Egypt. Such questions seem to just sit there. Is there a sub we can redirect such questions to without giving offence.
