Does anyone know what the two elf-like creatures on either side of the handle of the Ficoroni Cista?
I'm afraid most looking up I do on the items goes over a lot of the art but I seem to be having trouble finding this detail.
Numerous sites identify the two creatures - shown here, for example as being satyrs, and I find no reason to contest that conclusion. The satyr was traditionally seen as being part animal - often goat - hence the pointed ears. I assume you wondered about the ears and that you concluded that it might be an indication that these were elves.
The association of pointed ears with elves is actually rather late in the game. And it was not typically part of actual folk belief. For the most part, legends about elves begin with people not recognizing that the entities were anything but other people. It is only as the legend unfolds that the supernatural nature of the elves is revealed. Pointed ears would be too easy of a giveaway for the way legends were traditionally told. Pointed ears - like wings - became part of the Victorian-era inheritance. There are deeper roots in art for both, but these sorts of frilly attributes for elves and fairies did not seep into the popular, urban conscience until the late nineteenth century.
