What's the history of the understanding of the book of Genesis? I've heard that different groups have had different opinions about how literal to take it and how much it was considered allegorical both among Jewish and Christian groups.

As a side note I'm also interested in answers that talk about the Middle Ages and how the four-fold method (literal, typological, moral, anagogical) was used in understanding Genesis.
