What books would you recommend that give a good overview of the entire history of the Mayan Empire?
In particular, a study of the major historical events (political / religious), but some info on society and mythology would be interesting as well.
Also, a fairly easy enjoyable read for non-academic, purely recreational, purpose would be best
The Ancient Maya by Robert Sharer (revised by Loa Traxler) is the best single volume introduction to the Maya, in my opinion. It is very comprehensive and a fairly easy read.
Martin and Grube's Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens is the standard reference work on Maya history.
We have a number of recommendations on the Maya in our Books and Resources list
