Did the Southern colonies of North America always have a distinct food culture and if no, how long did it take for "Southern" cooking to develop in the US?
You may consider cross posting in /r/AskCulinary. I know that there are food historians there, and specifically a southern food historian drops by from time to time. Can't remember their handle though.
