Why are there Greek and Roman gods of the same things?

by benevolentonion

For instance, regarding gods of agriculture, I found Vervactor, Reparator, Insitor, Obarator, Serritor, and many others while I thought Ceres was the only one.

Why do so many Greek and Roman gods overlap?

The more unknown gods were usually the gods of only one or two very very specific aspects. The exact aspect could get lost since then so we don't know it anymore or people are just generalizing. The big gods - Ceres in your example- is the main goddess of everything and would be the first people prayed to. Some gods would also only be found in one region so that it was possible that multiple gods existed for the same aspect.
