So all this time, I thought "Iberia" was the name people use for pre-Roman Spain, but today I was researching saints. I came across "Ashot of Iberia", and thought "what a strange name for a Spaniard", but it turns out "Iberia" in this case is the Byzantine name for modern Georgia.
So my question is, who exactly are (were?) the Iberians? Why are there two places named Iberia, even though they're entirely different cultures and time periods? Were Iberians an actual peoples, or is it a term like "Barbarian"?
