The chances of this ever actually happening are very low. There is no way to be sure that no one ever shot at another persons feet to make them dance, but the popular depiction of "Wild West" gun slingers is make believe. Most of what we believe about the old west is from Buffalo Bill's traveling wild west show. It was all entertainment. In The Mythical West: An Encyclopedia of Legend, Lore, and Popular Culture, Richard W. Slatta is clear to point out most old west towns had very strick gun laws prohibiting guns to be brought into town. Movies and Tv bassically created "cowboys" and quick draw duels in the street.
