Go just about anywhere and a glass beer or Coke bottle will have a standard cap that can always be opened easily with a standard bottle opener. Where did the size and shape come from? How was is spread the World over?
Carbonated beverages need special mechanisms to prevent uncorking. Sparkling wine bottles generally have a wire cage that must be untwisted; Grolsch Beer has traditionally used a “de beugel” design with a wire and porcelain swing-top closure. Nineteenth-century bottlers used a variety of stoppers and closures, some of which leaked or contaminated the beverage.
Baltimore inventor William Painter in 1892 invented the “crown cork cap” that we know well today. This required a change in the design of bottle necks, which wasn’t easy to get bottle manufacturers to agree to, but the design was very cost effective and spread around the world.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers recognizes the crown cork cap as an International Mechanical Engineering Landmark. PDF report here
