What things would you want to have included in a Genocide Theory and Human Rights class?

So I've been teaching this class now for a couple of years and I am looking to deepen my knowledge. There is so much in a field labeled Genocide that we could talk about and cover. I currently teach the Holocaust as a case-study, and look at the different sociological theories that apply there. Then we go on and learn and apply about Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge. Sometimes we talk about Iraq and the Kurds, or Bosnia and the Muslims (based on class interest); and then we usually end with the Rwandan genocide. We talk a lot about the United States and the strategies and rationale they have used. The class is a Sociological theory class, so if you have research papers, even better (I have a hard time finding articles that try to explain the how and why).

Tl,DR I teach a Genocide Theory & Human Rights class (400 level) at my university and could use some under-discussed events and under-discussed aspects of common knowledge events.

I highly recommend reading this book about the Rwandan Genocide which offers deep insight into how the western system of indirect rule greatly exacerbated the divisions of Rwandan society and indeed was largely responsible for creating the climate of hatred between the Hutus and the Tutsis that created the genocide. This process offers a lot of insight into the way that genocides are not an organic result of human social history but are, in fact, largely created by deliberate socio-governmental policies.

One thing I like to do, especially in upper level courses, is solicit feedback from students regarding the course material. So, on or toward the last day of class, I might give a short worksheet for extra credit where I ask about material they liked, found useful (or not), and what things they'd of liked to have covered in greater depth or felt should have been added. In a 400 level, I've found such feedback surprisingly useful the next time I reach the class and response rates are pretty good if you offer a few points extra credit for completion.
