I came here from a thread on /r/Europe that was talking about King Leopold II. One poster in that thread from Nigeria was talking about how difficult it was for the British to control Nigeria, and how he was wondering how ever King Leopold II was able to control an area 4x the size of his country. So what I was wondering was:
The Congo Free state was a huge place, how could King Leopold control all this land, especially as a private venture?
Did he ever control all of the Free State, or was he just focusing on the vital money making parts?
Was there any large scale resistance against his rule in the Congo from the native tribes? Did any tribes rise up in rebellion against his rule?
Not a answer itself, but do check out this AMA we held on the topic of the Congo as you may find it relavant.
