Have there been any tries of total controlling of judicitary system in modern democracies?

I'm Polish and in my country there are currently undergoing changes to totally control judicitary system by assinging it to the Minister of Justice.

Question is - as in title - but also I would like to know if these historical changes were successful, how did they end, what were the results.

Its hard to narrow a timespan, but let's say we are talking here about modern times (past 1989?) without dictatorships.
