Who was the Japanese Kamikaze pilot that hit the USS Enterprise, causing it to exit the war.

by MotherGoose220

Going through a family member's war memorabilia, we came across a couple interesting items and asked him about them (from his time serving on the Enterprise). He told us the first item (white silk that looks to be charred) is a part of the Kamikaze Pilot's parachute, and the second item was a piece from the plane itself.

I am interested in learning more about the pilot as well as what steps I should take to properly preserve these items.

So you are in luck as he actually was identified rather conclusively in 2003 as part of a real collective effort. Led by Kan Sugahar a Japanese historian and Etajima graduate who worked with surviving Kamikaze pilot family members and members of the CV-6 Association and helped along by artifacts from the attack and surviving IJN records.

Anyway his name was LTJG Shunsuke Tomiyasu, long improperly translated as Tomi Zai. The attached article by Sugahar from the USNI from 2008 is very much what you are looking for as it provides an overview of the attack, search for his identity, and what records and depiction of his life we have. https://www.usni.org/magazines/navalhistory/2008-04/who-knocked-enterprise-out-war
