As I google this question there's multiple sources such as onlinecollegecourses.com that claim he was a bad speller in both his native tongue, as well as in English. However; the most relevant quote I've been able to find is “I cannot write in English, because of the treacherous spelling?”, which the article attributes only to his learning the English language in his fifties. So, my question is, was Albert Einstein bad at spelling, or was it just that switching between German and English can be difficult because the languages have a lot of similar words and sounds, but different spellings (e.g., bier/beer, haus/house)?
Thanks in advance!
I think he was only referring to the fact that English is not spelled like its pronounciation.
The best example for it is the fact that Sean and Bean does not rhyme.
In German, most of the words are spelled the way they are pronounced, even the most complex words are easy to spell if you speak regular German.
English on the other hand has many rules like i before e except after c, etc. Other than that, Einstein had no issues with German, his first language.
