I did a quick search, and found nothing, so sorry if this is a repeated question. I am primarily of Scandinavian ancestry. How likely is it that my ancestors were Viking raiders?
It is virtually certain that you have ancestors that were vikings, and you absolutely certainly have ancestors who weren't. When you go back a 1000 years, you have way more ancestors than people who actually lived in that area of Europe, as the amount of ancestors per generation doubles.
This means, that likely you are descendant not only from viking raiders, but even the kings and lords, on both sides of any conflict, and you are a descendant of the farmers in Scandinavia and the slaves the vikings took, the victims that survived viking raids etc.
You likely also have ancestors in many other places within and outside Europe, as no region has been isolated from the rest of the world.
The important thing to remember, is that your ancestry was not one group, so the question isn't if your ancestors were vikings, but if some of your ancestors were. The answer to that question is almost certainly yes, but hopefully you can see that there is so much more to it.
