What was the furthest south in Africa WW2 reached?

by DiamondJoeQuimby80

Anyone know? Which unit or battle etc was at the very most southern point in the desert?

If we consider the coastal waters to count, then all the way! German commerce raiders and U-Boats operated all the way to and around the Cape. While Cape Town was a crucial supply and stop over port, and base for squadrons fighting said German raiders. Special missions like the Germany to Japan supply runs also took this route, or the deployment of the 'Monsoon Group" German U-Boats sent to operate in the East Indies from Japanese bases.

We also have the invasion of Madagascar where a British force sought to secure the island from its Vichy garrison with initial landings in May 1942 and the island secured finally in the Fall of 1942. You also on the mainland would have the East African Campaign, where n 1940-41 the Allies forced the Italians out of their former East African holdings centered around Ethiopia.

I've always wanted to learn more about the fighting in Africa south of the Sahara during WW2, can anyone suggest any good general histories? I'm only aware of the fighting around ethiopia abd vaguely a campaign in French West Africa.

I don't know if it's different enough to be considered it's own question, but what happened to the Belgian Congo after the fall of Belgium? Was a pro-German colonial administration created?
