My mother was gifted this box from her mother's boyfriend in 1991. The note reads:
"Tami
This was given to me in Indonesia in 1968 after working on plaugue.
G (George Irving)"
She really wants to understand what it is and what the newspaper clipping says.
The newsletter is not in Indonesian nor Javanese. It seems like an upside down Sanskrit script from your photo.
The second picture wooden plaque is from Central Java (Djawa Tengah) provincial government. It has Central Java province logo as long as the text "Pemerintah Daerah Propinsi Djawa Tengah" (Central Java Provincial Government). The box itself has Central Java province logo. Djawa Tengah is an older spelling of Jawa Tengah. It's a province in Java island in Indonesia which famous for its Borobudur temple. Borobudur is featured in the logo, the "stupa" at the background, on the top of wavy ocean.
This is the current coloured version of the logo from government site: http://www.kemendagri.go.id/media/logo/daerah/33-prov.jateng.jpg
