Hello /r/askhistorians,

I was wondering if someone of you might be able to tell me what this heritage actually is or what it might have been used for.

The things I know from my grandmother:

It was an item of her first Husband. As far as she knows, he was member of the freemasons - and this item might be related to them. Also she said it might be key, she wasn't able to remember correctly but she said she heard something like that.

As far as I know skulls are not a usual sign for freemasons, there might be some lodges using them (maybe scottish rite).

Also I'm pretty sure this is not a key, but who knows`? - maybe someone of you.

I appreciate your help since I really have no clue what this item is. Would love to know what it symbolic meaning is (if there is one) or if it's just some sort of paperweight.

Thanks in advance.

If this had been unearthed in an archaeological dig, someone would surely have tagged it as " ceremonial object".

Could you post the dimensions? It looks like it has about the same proportions as a domino. The unadorned slab part does suggest it was meant to fit into something ( like dominos), with the skull as the handle....but how or why is hard to tell.
