There's a song by Sabaton called Uprising that is focused around the uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto and there are several lines that I'm confused about what they're referring to.
"1939 and the allies turned away"
"1944 still the allies turn away"
and
"1944 help that never came"
What are these lines referring to?
In 1939, as you probably know, the germans invaded Poland. During this invasion Poland basicly fought alone. They recieved little to no help from the allies, France and Britain. This was partly because it took time mobilizing, partly because Poland is far from France and Britain and partly due to lack of will from their allies. The plan was that if Germany invaded Poland, Poland had to hold for two weeks before the french and british were ready to attack in the west. After this the allies should inade Germany from France. This attack came, and the french forces advanced over the border where they met some resistance. Then they decided to fall back to the Maginot line and wait for the German attack. This way the allies "turned away" from their ally in Poland.
The last lines are about the Warsaw uprising in 1944. In 1944 when the Soviet Union was only days from liberating Warsaw, the polish underground resistance in the city started a large scale uprising. Despite the uprising the Soviet forces stopped outside Warsaw and waited for 2 months before they continued their advance towards Warsaw. This left the Polish resistance almost alone against the german garrison in the city.
