Were there black Roman soldiers in Britain? The British press often conflated North African with black, but is there any proof they were black rather than Caucasian Berbers or Moors? Septimus Severus is often called black despite being of Berber and Italian heritage.

The short answer is it is very plausible there were black Roman soldiers in Britain (possibly Sub-Saharan African, but more likely East African) due to the interconnected nature of the Empire and its periphery and the practice of stationing soldiers in areas they were not from.
