Did the Spartans and Romans do intermittent fasting?

In The Warrior Diet written by Ori Hofmekler in 2002, He States that Spartans and Romans had diets consisting of eating meals in a 4-hour window sometime during the day. Is this true?

I've never heard any claim like that. Is Hofmekler referring specifically to soldiers on campaign, or those at home? Soldiers out in the field would probably eat whenever they could, which may well have fallen within a specific few hours each day - say, before or after the battle. But I'd say more out of convenience than anything else.
