IWW/Wobblies -- I know they have something to do with labor unions, but what is their significance and history?
"Wobbiles" was slang for member of the IWW -- the Industrial Workers of the World, an international labor union that was very active in the United States in early 20th century. The IWW as a general union, organizing across craft and guild lines. They also promulgated a model of "industrial democracy" that never became terribly widespread (partially due to govt repression in the 1920s-50s), but which somewhat influenced later models of worker-owned enterprises.
The IWW is still around, being one of the oldest continually active labor unions in the United States.
