I'm looking for a book or two on the history of Norway. It'd be cool if they went waaaaaaaay back to some of the earliest human activity there. I hope this is an ok question for this sub... Thanks!
Sverre Bagge is the biggest and most popular historian in Norway today, and I'd say his From Viking Stronghold to Christian Kingdom: State Formation in Norway, c. 900-1350 is the best place to start when it comes to an English language source on Norwegian history. The book covers the creation of Norway during the course of the Viking age and then continues on with the medieval period after that. The book then conveniently ends before the reign of Haakon VI whose reign brought Norway into a personal union with Sweden, and then with Denmark under his wife Margaret I - ending Norwegian independence for 550 years.
I am not that well-read on Norwegian archaeology, so perhaps someone else will help with that.
You might want to check out the sagas bye Snorre Sturlason, mainly the "Heimskringla" which is about the the Norwegian kings in the period 850-1170. It was written around 1230, and it is one of the first written records of our history. You might also want to check out the the newer "Edda", which is about the Norse faith and its traditions.
Keep in mind that thees are not a 100% historical accurate, however they might be interesting.
