It seems to be widely accepted that it was a functional lingua franca, but what exactly does that mean? Was it like <10% of the population, who comprised the administrative class and just happened to be spread across the country? Or was it a significant chunk of the people?
If I can piggy back off of this, to what extent was education in India conducted in English during the British occupation, as opposed to in Hindi or other local languages?
