Was the whole "make out point/bluff" a real thing in 1950ish America, or something made up for slasher films?

Mods, would asking a few people who were big into the dating scene in the middle-to-late fifties count as an anecdotal answer?

Searching for "Lover's Lane" in old issues of the periodical Motordom, I came across this little item of sex, cars, and corruption in New Jersey. From the March 1918 edition:

"Jersey justice is in high repute among the motorists in and about Atlantic City since the conviction of Wilbur Speece on the charge of extortion, and his sentence to the State prison at Trenton for a term of from one to three years. Speece evolved a system of bagging motorists in traps on the famous White Horse Pike, a fine stretch of road entering Atlantic City, and had himself elected a justice of the peace so that he could put the system in operation. Once in office he spotted a number of lonely sections along the Pike which were veritable "lovers lanes". Many machines were halted in these spots when the course of true love was running smooth and Squire Speece reckoned the young man would not make a fuss about paying a fine for "obstructing the highway", and he was right.

Deputies who shared in the profits guarded well the traps and the Squire was kept busy imposing fines and costs. Finally the workings of the system became known to S. Chandler Stewart of the Motor Vehicle Department at Trenton and he baited a trap for the Squire. He had several of his friends take their families to the places where the system was in operation and when they stopped the vigilant constables took them all before the waiting court, including the State official. After all had paid their fines Mr Stewart revealed his identity and the arrest of the Squire and his deputies followed."
