Was there cultural appropriation hundreds or years ago or is this a relatively new term?

If you're looking for this history of the term, /r/etymology might be a good resource.

Historical "cultural appropriation" is a bit difficult, because trying to impose modern concepts in vastly different societies doesn't always work well. Was blackface "cultural appropriation"? What about putting native artifacts into European museums?
