Sources about Armenian Genocide

by Thucydides1987

I'm thinking of writing a novel about the genocide, from the perspective of someone that lived through the forced marches through the desert in Turkey/Syria.

Can anyone recommend some primary/secondary sources with detailed information about the marches, the experiences that people went through, etc?

Thanks.

A few suggestions for readings from a few different angles:

  • Kévorkian, Raymond. The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History - Very well reviewed general history. It is long but should be your starting point.
  • Miller, Donald E. & Miller, Lorna Touryan. Survivors: An Oral History of the Armenian Genocide - Survivor testimony, so perhaps of special interest for you given what you seek to write about.
  • Winter, Jay. America and the Armenian Genocide of 1915 - International perspective
  • Gust, Wolfgang. The Armenian Genocide: Evidence from the German Foreign Office Archives, 1915-1916 -Documented primary source evidence
  • Bobelian, Michael. Children of Armenia: A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice - Unlike this others, this is a distinctly non-academic book, and although it does give an overview of the history, I note it here of principle interest for its discussion of how the diaspora community dealt with the memory of the genocide.
