I often hear that Allied paratroopers assaulting Normandy took heavy losses while in the air and once landed were quite scattered and disorganized. Taking this into consideration, did the paratroops do reasonably well at achieving their objectives? Was this an effective use of resources that tangibly helped the Normandy landings as a whole?
On the eastern side of the bridgehead the British 6th airborne division completed all of their assigned tasks.
The 9th paratrooper battalion (of the did British 6th airborne division) not have as many people as they hoped for during the Merville gun battery assault. If anyone knows why A company of the Canadian paratrooper battalion which was supposed to protect the flank of the 9th did not assist in the assault would you please post below! It's one of the mysteries of D-Day for me.
The wide scattering and disorganization happened more on the eastern side of the bridgehead and involved the 2 American divisions (82nd and 101st). I assume someone else here has more knowledge about this.
