Hey all! My museum is currently working on a WWII exhibit and we are trying to figure out what uniform these ladies are wearing. My background isn't in Military history and I've been unable to place them, however as their shoes are not uniform I believe they may a part of some sort of local auxiliary group. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The photo was taken in Sacramento on K street but no date is recorded.
Thank you in advance!
Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
The non-standard foot ware does cause some confusion as well as the lack of any uniform insignia aside from what appear to be a pair of wings.
The key is the wings.
The uniforms dont match the cut of anything that I'm aware of that any of the uniformed services would wear, so looking at the wings, they most likely are not Civil Air Patrol (wrong shape from what it looks like), but they might be Air Warning Service wings, which was a civilian volunteer service. American Women's Voluntary Services was another women's volunteer group that had some inconstant uniforms. That's sort of the kicker here. Uniforms during WWII were often very hodge podge.
Another thing to look at are what are called "Sweetheart pins." These pins were awarded for war work by corporations involved in the war effort, fun collectibles, etc and are very diverse.
I would check into, if it's possible, various corporations and volunteer groups that operated near Sacramento during the war, especially at McClellan Army Air Field.
