Was Marco Polo a real person?

by kelrorelys

My history teacher recently told us that Marco Polo was a made up man who's stories were actually a collection of other people and that there was never really an explorer named Marco Polo. Is there any truth to this?

The will that Marco Polo left about six month before he died is one of the manuscripts in the Marciana National Library in Venice, Cod. Lat. V, 58. In the will he mentions several members of his family by name, including his three daughters, appoints two other family members to give some of his inheritance to specific churches in Venice, and lists several items, among them precious jewelry pieces which are also mentioned in his earlier memoirs as things he collected in his travels. The authenticity of the will has not been questioned, so it is safe to say that Marco Polo, Venetian traveler of the thirteenth century, was a real person.
