Did Ivan the Terrible know that people called him Ivan "the Terrible"?

by kbryan31

Or how long after the fact were these types of monikers added on?

It is imporant to note that actual Russian nickname of Ivan IV was different from the most common modern meaning of the word 'Terrible'. Better translation of the word 'Grozny' to the modern English would be maybe 'Dangerous' or even 'Awe-inspiring'.

As for actual question - he was never called 'Grozny' in any contemporary correspondence. This nickname was given to him only after death.
