How did Captain Planet and the Planeteers fit into the environmentalist movement of the 80s and 90s?

Captain Planet was an environmentalist cartoon on the air from 1990 through 1996. Each episode featured the titular teenagers and Superman-ish superhero Captain Planet recruited by the goddess Gaia fighting a villain. The episodes all ended with a "the power is yours!" vignette, showing ways that viewers could participate in reducing their environmental impact.

Having grown up in the 90s, I feel like it fits in with other environmentalist media of the time, like the film Fern Gully. However, I'm not aware of anything similar today. Was Captain Planet politically contentious at the time? How did it fit into the broader picture of environmentalism? Who was behind the push at this time for children's environmental programming?

How did it fit into the broader picture of environmentalism? Who was behind the push at this time for children's environmental programming?

If I can expand on this part of the question: Was there a general push by interest groups for more "responsible" children's programming at the time, e.g. fewer violent (like Looney Toons and GI Joe) and more educational programs? And was this unique to the era or has that been a theme throughout the years?
