It's often said the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger because Greeks/Romans believed a vein connected it to the heart. Where does this idea come from?

I've seen countless times where this belief of the romans/greeks was referenced, but when I looked into it I failed to find any solid information on where this belief originated or when it originated. Where did the idea of the ring finger being connected to the heart originate from, and if no source actually exists then where did the misconception come from?
