At the time of Muhammad, was it normal for a 9 year old girl to have sex with her husband?

Was it normal at that time and place for girls around the age of 9 to be married to men, I'm assuming they would probably have sex as well.

I'm trying to keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions about if it was ok or not what he did. 1400 years ago, were some things normal/cultural that today we would find disgusting?
