The Black Pharaohs

by Dovakin1

Years ago I remember watching a documentary about a dynasty of Black Pharaohs that ruled ancient Egypt at some point in antiquity. I was very young at the time so I can't remember much. I do have a recollection that the dynasty in question was Ethiopian in origin. I'm by no means an expert in Egyptology however I've never come across mention of this dynasty since. I even worked in a small archeology museum for a while and there was no mention of it. If anyone has any information or reading recommendations to find out more about this it would be much appreciated.

You are thinking of the Twenty-fifth dynasty. When you say they were Ethiopian in origin, you are sort-of correct, but not Ethiopian in the sense of being from the area of the modern country of Ethiopia. They were "aethiopian" in the sense that according to greek understandings of geography, "aethiopia" is a catch-all term for africans living south of Egypt proper.

To get around this confusion, historians and classicists usually say that the dynasty was ethnically Nubian, which refers specifically to peoples who lived in the Nile valley to the south of Egypt, and whose capital was at Napata, and later at Meroe.
