Why did the Dominion of Newfounland chose to join Canada rather than declare independence

This one will be rather punctual, but to put it rather simply Newfoundland from from 1907 to 1947 DID opt out of joining Canada in favor of independence. Around the great depression however their economy hit the absolute depths of low and the opportunity for independence was revoked by the Government in London.

Following the Second World War a vote was held and Newfoundland voted 44.5% to 41.1% in favor of becoming independent again. However the results proved inconclusive without a majority and London called for a second referendum.

Between the first and second referendum, rumors of the Catholic church levying influence to affect the vote came in which angered the Orange Order, a large group of protestants that used to predominate in Newfoundland. The Orange Order whipped in favor of Confederation due to these rumors and because of the large Protestant population this time Confederation won 51% to 49%.

Newfoundland therefore joined Canada out of British fears of American annexation of the place following the war, and the insatiable need to fight Catholics from the Orange Order. Cheers!
