Is there record of German-Americans attempting to leave the USA to join the Nazi party in Germany during WWII? Did the government track/look out for that at the time?

I was wondering if, at the start of WWII and with Hitlers rise to power, was there groups of German-Americans who returned to their homeland to join the Nazi party and fight? If so, was that something the government was following at the time? Were there records of these people?
