How deserving was the Polish cavalry of the praise they get now days?

by Brohova

I have seen a lot of people (particularly in the comments of Sabaton videos) really hyping up the Polish "Winged Hussars" With lots of people providing all kinds of anecdotes about their incredible achievements. How much of this is legitimate and how much is the result of propaganda/embellishment?

Specifically I have seen a number of people talking about the outstanding nature of Polish war horses, I would love to know if this is warranted and if so what made them unique?

Hussars were very successful at their time - this is not propaganda. As per Wikipedia:

With the Battle of Lubiszew in 1577, the 'Golden Age' of the Husaria began. Between then and the Battle of Vienna in 1683, the Hussars fought many battles against various enemies, most of which they won. In the battles of Lubiszew in 1577, Byczyna (1588), Kokenhausen (1601), Kircholm (1605), Kłuszyn (1610), Chocim (1621), Martynów (1624), Trzciana (1629), Ochmatów (1644), Beresteczko (1651), Połonka (1660), Cudnów (1660), Chocim (1673), Lwów (1675), Vienna (1683), and Párkány (1683), they proved to be the decisive factor against often overwhelming odds. For instance, in the Battle of Kluszyn during the Polish–Muscovite War, the Russians outnumbered the Commonwealth army 5 to 1, yet were heavily defeated.

Winged Hussars were the "heavy" cavalary of its times: their charges allowed to beat much bigger groups of enemy infrantry and lighter cavalary (e.g. in battle of Kircholm 2600 hussars + 1000 infrantry defeated 2500 Swedish cavalary and 8300 infrantry).

the horses were bred to run very fast with a heavy load and to recover quickly. These were hybrids of old, Polish equine lineage and eastern horses, usually from Tatar tribes. As a result, a horse could walk hundreds of kilometres loaded with over 100 kilograms (warrior plus armour and weaponry) and instantly charge. Also, hussar horses were very quick and maneuverable. This made hussars able to fight with any cavalry or infantry force from western heavy cuirassiers to quick Tatars. There was a death penalty for selling a husaria horse (somethimes the horses were referred to as "tarpan") to someone outside of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

When we speak about the praise: in Polish sources a lot of respect is given to the Tatar cavalary that could be considered "light" and that used completely different tactics than hussars: Tatars relied on high mobility provided by their horses and they would rely on bows and arrows to slowly decimate enemy fighters (a lot of respect is given to their archery skill - being able to ride a horse and accurately shoot at the same time; in fact the wings are believed to be something used to defend against lassos thrown by Tatars/other enemies in order to try to grab a hussar and throw him from his horse).

This is reddit, so we could make a comparison that Hussars were sort of "battle tanks" that would simply charge through enemy formations - often ending the battle fast. Other types of calarary relied on charges as well, but they were generally less armored - and less successful. Meanwhile Tatars harassed the enemy forces with bows (as I wreote above Poles gave a lot of respect to the Tatar archery skills).
