In The Lion in Winter, Richard the Lionheart is portrayed as haunted by unrequited love for the French king, Philip II. Is there any historical basis for such a portrayal?

Hi, I'm sure there's more to say on the subject but I addressed the issue of Richard's sexuality here. Essentially there is very little reason to believe that Richard and Philip were sexually intimate, and the suggestion derives from modern misreadings of the sources.
