Good Primary Sources for Olaudah Equiano?

by Smitchface

Hello! I'm taking my first college courses this year (dual credit) and have to write a five-page paper on a topic that interests me! I have chosen the life of Olaudah Equiano and need two primary resources as well as two secondary resources. I have never had to write a paper of this size (especially for this type) and am sort of at a loss for resources. My main trouble is finding a primary source other than The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Is anybody aware of another primary source I could use? Any help would be awesome! And any tips on how to go about this project would be great as well! Thanks, guys! :D

Hello there. Your question seems to be related to school work, so we just want to remind you, and any potential respondents, that our rules DO permit people to ask for help with their homework, so long as they are seeking clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself. This policy is further explained in this META Thread.

Additionally, while our users may be able to help you out here, we hope that you also will take the time to check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which should hopefully prove to be helpful for you as you continue in your research.

There is a published collection of his other writings ("The letters and other writings of Gustavus Vassa"). Also several excellent biographies which should alert you to the controversy over the Interesting Narrative (Equiano may or may not have actually been born on the African continent, there are historians who argue both ways). I would consult with your professor to see if she wants you to use two primary sources by the same author or not - when I give similar assignments, part of the point is to have my students compare sources by different authors. If that's the case, there are memoirs by other abolitionists he was in contact with, as well as a huge trove of materials about the abolitionist project more broadly.
