Did Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, exist? From what I have been reading, it seems like a lot of historians do believe Muhammad exist, but there seems to be a lot more tolerance of the idea that Muhammad did not exist in the academic world than there is for the idea that Jesus didn't exist. Most who deny Jesus existing end up being called Christ-myth conspiracy theorist and laughed off by most historians, but with Muhammad it doesn't seem like that all the time. Is this just because not as much study has been done on the historical Muhammad in the west as it has been on Jesus? Is it more plausible that Muhammad not existing than Jesus not existing? Even if he did exist, how much can we really know about him? Even this I noticed among scholars, who will usually be able to concede facts about Jesus's life, but never Muhammad's life. I have even seen it questioned if Muhammad was even from Arabia, whereas for Jesus, no historian questions he came from Galilee and was a Jew. What's up with this?
Follow up question, how common are the sentiments and discussions posted in this question as 'given'? Are they a regional or national thing? If anything the sentiment at my uni tends to be reversed (Northern-European)
I have never seen a historian proclaim the existence of Jesus. Can you provide a link to one who does?
