One of the major factors is the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was built during this time period. The CPR fulfilled a condition of British Columbia's entry into the Confederation in 1871. Primarily Chinese and Japanese workers immigrated for the project. However, once the railway was built it probably also increased resettlement from Eastern to Western Canada.

The gold rush affected Western Canada similarly to the American west, but I don't know enough about American history to really compare.
