So I have an impression that race was treated somewhat differently in Louisiana compared to other regions in the deep south on account of the Creole population from the French period. Is this correct? and if so how was the treatment of free non Europeans in a slave state? On a related note how did the insular and anglo centered culture of the south integrate the non anglo Catholic French population?
More can certainly be said, but I did discuss some aspects of New Orleans and race here which would be relevant for you.
