How much power did medieval kings actually possess? E.g. were they more powerful than modern day presidents?

When depicted in television and media kings are portrayed as having limitless unquestionable power. In practice how much did they actually have and what is a modern day equivalent? For example do modern president have less or more power than medieval kings? What about mayors?

Unfortunately this is an almost impossible question to answer. Discussing such a broad geographical area and range of time, there is no consistent answer. Some kings were largely figure heads whose realm was outside of their control while others took direct control of their realms at the expense of their nobility. What you rarely see is the successful administration of whole kingdoms centered at the top. Absolute monarchy would have been unfamiliar to European nobility throughout the middle ages.
