I am struggling to find any information on the background for decolonization and any help as well as insight would be appreciated.
Hi there, is this a homework question? If so, we just want to remind you and any potential respondents, that our rules DO permit people to ask for help with their homework, so long as they are seeking clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself. This policy is looked at in depth in this META Thread.
Additionally, while our users may be able to give you a hand here, you may also like to check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which should hopefully be handy as you continue your work.
I would start with David Birmingham, The Decolonization of Africa, for an overview. The reasons for decolonization are still a subject of some debate (there's a lot of reasons, and the debate is generally over how much weight to give to different ones); and there's also variation across the in both the reasons for decolonization and the process it followed. For the French Empire in sub-Saharan Africa, Fred Cooper's work is excellent.
