Anytime African American slaves are mentioned, someone always chimes in and says "well there were Irish slaves too". I am curious as to what the reality was of these Irish American slaves. Were they slaves in the traditional sense of the word, or were they more of an indentured servant? Also what are the numbers of Irish compared to African slaves?
The short version is that there are no Irish American slaves, but it's a popular myth that we've dealt with before. /u/sowser has rundown of why the story is popular and what the real situation was.
In addition, Liam Hogan has been all over this myth for a few years now and has a compilation of his own work up that might be helpful.
