How did Princesses become so coveted and idolized?

by darexinfinity

Disney back in the 20th Century, had cemented their brand in the West through the use of Princesses to the point where every little girl even now wants to be "treated like a princess" despite Monarchies being not too popular during the time. Is there some historical context that showed how Princesses were excessively privileged and beloved by the masses?

Can you clarify or maybe add a reference? My understanding is princesses (in historical times) were mostly used as tokens for political gain in marriage, and as producers of male heirs thereafter. That situation (which may be incorrect) doesn't really amount to being "coveted and idolized".
