The significant differences of Rome and Carthage.

by Ouralian

Despite the fact that Carthage has been around much longer and have more territory and the fact that being quite wealthy, they are able to buy armies of mercenaries and fleets.

Even with Hannibal's genius, creating an alliance(Numidians, Spanish, Gauls, etc) and defeating their armies through horrendus battles. They were never able to convince the allies of Rome or Rome itself to break.

What does Rome got that Carthage don't? (Besides the numbers advantage.)

When you Ask - What does Rome got that Carthage don't?

What exactly are you refering to here, the punic Wars of the Cultures in General?

Just asking so i can get a better understanding and thus answer your question.

Rome had a massive pool of manpower to use, which is key here. Hannibal was one man in hostile territory. Yes, he waged 15 years independent warfare against the Romans, but Carthage back home was never behind him. As a matter of fact, there was a powerful peace party back in Carthage that worked hard to deny him the aid he needed. So, while he continually beat Roman armies, Rome could keep sending men and grind him down. Just as well, Rome sent an army into Spain, and even Macedon, which shows how much more dominant their army was, I believe Rome even had naval superiority. In the end, their victories in Spain, and denying Hannibal an ally in Macedon, allowed them to invade Africa and force Hannibal back, resulting in the Romab victory at Zama.
