Hi, first time making a post to r/AskHistorians. Currently I'm writing a primary source analysis on the Annals of 1066 in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles. People who've had experience in this subject, what are some good secondary sources you've used that discuss this section in Chronicles rather the events that take place within the chronicles?
Basically, I'm just looking for a few secondary sources discussing the Anglo Saxon chronicles rather than the events the Anglo Saxon Chronicles record. I've tried looking in my university's library but they don't have much on the subject at all and I'm kind of at a loss of where to go from here.
Sorry if this isn't the right kind of post to make on this subreddit, I didn't know where else to go.
If your library has a copy of Dorothy Whitelock's 1961 edition of the ASC, make use of it. Whitelock's prefaces in particular are useful in providing a comprehensive overview of the extant state of the ASC, how and when it was written and propagated, and the political sentiments underlying it.
I'd recommend reading Pauline Stafford's 'The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, identity and the making of England' (2007), and Unification and Conquest: A political and social history of England in the tenth and eleventh centuries (1989). I'd also suggest Reading the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: Language, Literature and History (2011), edited by Alice Jorgensen, Richard Abels and Bachrach's The Normans and their Adversaries (2001), and Simon Keynes and Michael Lapidge's Blackwell Companion to Anglo-Saxon Studies.
