I've been tasked with leading a small seminar on nationalism but I really don't have enough time to sufficiently prepare for it. What are some of the most frequently cited works on nationalism? If that is too broad a category, then what are the most important works on East European or Russian nationalism?
I don't need a long summary, just the names of the works. Thanks in advance!
Since no one else said anything, these are the classics:
Thomas Nairn, The Break-Up of Britain (1977, 1981, 2003)
Ernest Gellner, Nations and Nationalism (1983)
Eric Hobsbawm, Nations and Nationalism since 1780: Programme, Myth, Reality (1990) (also The Invention of Tradition (1992))
Benedict Anderson, Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism (1991)
Frederick Cooper and Laura Ann Stoler, eds., Tensions of Empire: Colonial Cultures in a Bourgeois World (1997)
Anthony Smith, The Nation in History: Historiographical Debates about Nationalism and History (2000)
Micheal Doyle, Empires (Cornell, 1986)
Jane Burbank and Frederick Cooper, Empires in World History: Power and the Politics of Difference (Princeton, 2011)
George Orwell, “Notes on Nationalism” (1945)
Geoff Eley and Ronald Suny, eds. Becoming National (1996)
John Breuilly, Nationalism and the State (1994)
Hope that helps.
/u/bakere05 has already suggested it but Benedict Anderson is a hot tip. If you want to go with a deconstruction of nationalism, go for Rogers Brubaker. I did an MM on groupism here.
